I changed my Bash dotfiles, and now I can’t log into CAEN Linux computers. How do I fix this?

If you make an incorrect change to your Linux dotfiles, it may prevent you from successfully logging into the Linux Remote Login Service. The CAEN VNC client, SSH, and SCP/SFTP can all be affected by spurious output from the login shell, so if you've made a change that causes output upon login, it might interfere with the login process.

You can fix 9or reset) your dotfiles by performing the following steps:

  1. Open http://mfile.umich.edu/ in a web browser
  2. Click Log in
  3. Click Show hidden files in the left pane
  4. Click the checkbox next to the file(s) you changed, such as .bashrc or .bash_profile
  5. Click Rename Selected File in the left pane
  6. Rename the file by adding .old to the end of the file name

You should then be able to log in successfully, and the dotfiles will be regenerated with the default configuration.
