Eligibility for a U-M Microsoft 365 Account (M365 Access)

Environment

U-M Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office productivity apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), Microsoft Teams

Issue

Am I eligible for a U-M Microsoft 365 account? Who has access to U-M Microsoft 365 (including Teams and Office productivity apps)?

Resolution

The following information is applicable across the Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn campuses. (Michigan Medicine has their own instance of Microsoft 365.)

Eligible

If you have at least one of the following affiliations, you are eligible for a U-M Microsoft 365 account for as long as you hold that affiliation:

• Students (from matriculation to either graduation or end of student status)
• Faculty (including emeritus faculty, lecturers, and intermittent lecturers)
• Staff (including temporary staff)
• Sponsored affiliates with regular uniqnames and UMIDs (i.e., Type-1 Sponsored Affiliates, strong identities)
• Sponsored affiliates with regular uniqnames and UMIDs that start with "99" (i.e., Type-2 Sponsored Affiliates, long-term guests)

Not eligible

The following affiliations are not eligible for a U-M Microsoft 365 account (as long as you do not have any of the roles from the previous list):

• Alumni
• Retirees
• Sponsored affiliates with uniqnames starting with "um" and followed by numbers (i.e., Type-3 Sponsored Affiliates, weak identities, short-term guests)
• U-M Friend accounts

Additionally, MCommunity groups and Shared Accounts are not eligible to access U-M Microsoft 365.

Not eligible for desktop apps

The following affiliations are not eligible for access to the Microsoft 365 desktop applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) with their U-M account:

• Michigan Medicine affiliates (faculty, regular/temp staff, students, and sponsored affiliates)
• Sponsored affiliates (Type-1 and Type-2)
• Other "light workers" (regular staff with specific job family codes - 60, 61, 62))

You will need to use the online web app versions instead. (MM affiliates can also choose to use the HITS-managed instance.)

Additional Information

• If a Microsoft 365 account is desired (and you are not eligible), you may purchase a Microsoft 365 Family or Personal subscription. Visit the Microsoft Workplace Discount Program website and enter your @umich.edu email address to find out if you are eligible for a discount through this program. (Note that U-M does not participate in the "Microsoft Grad Microsoft 365 Offer" for alumni.)
