Create a Project Site in Canvas

Environment

Canvas (Ann Arbor instance)

Issue

Creating new project (non-course) sites in Canvas

Resolution

Note: Canvas sites are created by IT Staff when it is determined to be the best option for what is required.

  • Faculty and Staff
    1. Determine whether Canvas is right for you
      • Will your non-academic course be used for facilitating collaboration, training, and research?
        • Review possible alternatives to decide whether Canvas is the best option for your project site. Possible alternatives include Google Drive and shared drives (formerly known as Team Drives), U-M Dropbox, and U-M Google Discussion Groups.
    2. Contact a U-M Canvas administrator to have your site created
      • University departments have Canvas Sub-Account Admins in departments who can help create sites
        • Please contact that person in your department if you know who they are
        • If you don't know who your Canvas Sub-Account Admin is, contact the ITS Service Center
          • Web Portal: its.umich.edu/help
          • Chat: chatsupport.it.umich.edu
          • Call: 734-764-HELP (764-4357)
  • Student Organizations
    • Please use Maize Pages (https://campusinvolvement.umich.edu/maize-pages)
      • If your organization is a Sponsored Student Organization, you can have a Canvas site created with the sponsoring unit's approval
    • Have your faculty or staff representative contact a U-M Canvas administrator to have your site created
      • University departments have Canvas Sub-Account Admins in departments who can help create sites
        • Please contact that person in your department if you know who they are
        • If you don't know who your Canvas Sub-Account Admin is, contact the ITS Service Center
