Accessing Canvas Courses as a Guest

Environment

Canvas
Cirrus Identity Console (social login)

Issue

An external course participant (someone without a U-M uniqname) is having difficulty accessing a Canvas course to which they were invited.

Note: These instructions do not apply to courses within the U-M Canvas Catalog (https://canvas.it.umich.edu/catalog.html).

Resolution

When you are invited to a course, you will receive an email notification to the email address that you were invited with.

Friend Account Method

  1. After receiving the email, go to https://friend.weblogin.umich.edu/friend/ and create an account using the same email address you were invited with.
  2. Go to https://umich.instructure.com/.
  3. Use the U-M Login option to log in with your Friend account.

Social Login Method

  1. The email notification may contain an invitation link. If it does not, follow the instructions for the Friend Account method.
  2. Clicking on an invitation link will prompt you to link your Canvas account with an existing account. Account types include:
    1. Google
    2. Microsoft
    3. LinkedIn
  3. After linking your Canvas account with another login, go to https://umich.instructure.com/.
  4. Choose the Invited Guest option.
  5. Choose the account type that you have linked with your Canvas account.
  6. Log in using those account credentials.

Additional Information

Note: It is important to create your login using the same email address you were invited with. If you do not, you will not see the course after logging in to Canvas.
