Persona identity verification process using mobile devices, tablets, or computers.
Issue
I am having difficulty completing ID verification.
Resolution
Use a mobile device if possible
For best results, use:
- A mobile phone
- The back camera of a tablet
A computer webcam can be used, but it may be harder to capture a clear image of your ID or selfie.
Confirm your University record is correct
Make sure your name and date of birth are correct and up to date in University systems. Incorrect or outdated information is a common reason people are unable to complete ID verification. If you have trouble verifying your identity, confirm that your information is accurate.

Note: Updates to your University record may take up to 24 hours to fully sync across U-M systems.
Tips for Capturing a Clear Image
Use the following tips when completing ID verification:
- Use a stable and strong internet connection.
- Make sure your ID or selfie is fully visible and contained within the camera frame.
- Avoid backlighting from windows, lamps, or bright light sources, as glare can make the image unreadable.
- If the image appears blurry, slowly move closer to the camera until the image is in focus.
- When taking a photo of your ID, place it on a flat surface with a contrasting background.
- When prompted to take a selfie, turn your head slowly and deliberately.
Try Again
After reviewing the tips above, try completing ID verification again.
If you are using MFA Recovery
If you are completing ID verification as part of MFA recovery, use the self-service recovery process to try again.
If you are updating Account Recovery
If you are completing ID verification to update Account Recovery, reply to your existing support ticket and request a new ID verification invitation link.
