Set up Okta Verify Desktop App for FastPass Windows

Environment

Okta, Okta Verify, Windows

Issue

Set up Okta FastPass on a Windows desktop or laptop computer.

Resolution

Important: You must first enroll in Okta on a mobile device before you can set up Okta FastPass. To enroll in Okta, you must either set up the Okta Verify mobile app or obtain a hardware token. After enrolling, you can then set up the Okta Verify desktop app to use FastPass and treat it as a secondary MFA device. The desktop app is always available as an MFA option, regardless of any other devices you have set up.
Important: Configure Windows Hello if it is not already configured on your device before completing the steps below.
  1. Open the Start menu (or click the Windows Search box).
  2. Search for Okta Verify (it’s typically pre-installed on MiWorkspace-managed devices).
    • If the Okta Verify app is installed, select it to open, then go to Step 3.
    • If the Okta Verify app is not installed:
  3. Click Get Started.
  4. Review the “How it works” information and click Next.
  5. If it is not auto-populated, enter https://okta.umich.edu in the field under New Account, and then click Next. The Okta Sign-in page opens.
  6. Enter your uniqname and click Next.
  7. Click Okta Verify - Get a push notification and complete authentication.
  8. Click Enable to enable Windows Hello.
  9. Complete the Windows Hello authentication prompt.
  10. Continue with the steps below and Test Okta Fast Pass on your device.

Test Okta FastPass

  1. Go to okta.umich.edu in a private/incognito window to test your sign in
  2. Enter your uniqname and password if prompted
  3. Choose Okta Verify - FastPass to complete authentication and make FastPass your default
    1. If you do not see FastPass as an option to sign in, click Verify with something else, then choose Okta Verify - FastPass
  1. Note: Chrome and Edge users may receive a pop-up asking for permission to look for and connect to any device on your local network. Click Allow. You will only need to do this once. If you click Block, you will not be able to use Okta FastPass on that browser until you reset the permissions.

  2. Complete the Windows Hello authentication option.

You are now set up and ready to use Okta FastPass, and you can close any remaining browser windows.
