Set up Okta Verify Desktop App for FastPass - Windows

Body

Environment

Okta, Okta Verify

Issue

Set up Okta FastPass on a Windows desktop or laptop computer.

Resolution

Important: You must first enroll in Okta on a mobile device before you can set up Okta FastPass. To enroll in Okta, you must either set up the Okta Verify mobile app or obtain a hardware token. After enrolling, you can then set up the Okta Verify desktop app to use FastPass and treat it as a secondary MFA device. The desktop app is always available as an MFA option, regardless of any other devices you have set up.
  • If you are unable to enroll in Okta using the Okta Verify app, please follow the steps in this article: Getting Started with Okta: Enroll Without a Smartphone or the App
  • If you are using a Windows computer that is managed by MiWorkspace, the Okta Verify app is already installed on your computer.
  • If you are using an unmanaged / personal Windows computer, download Okta Verify. Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the application.

Set up Okta FastPass

  1. Search for Okta Verify in the Windows search bar and open the application.
  2. Click Get Started.
  3. Review the “How it works” information and click Next.
  4. If it is not auto-populated, enter https://okta.umich.edu in the field under New Account, and then click Next. The Okta Sign-in page opens.
  5. Enter your uniqname and click Next.
  6. Click Okta Verify - Get a push notification and complete authentication.
  7. Click Enable to enable Windows Hello.
  8. Complete the Windows Hello authentication prompt.
  9. Continue with the steps below and Test Okta Fast Pass on your device.

Test Okta FastPass

  1. Open an Incognito/Private browser window, or or use a different browser than the one used to set up Okta FastPass (e.g., if you used Chrome to set up FastPass, use Edge to test it).
  2. Copy/paste the following URL to navigate to the Okta Enrollment Test Login page: https://oktaverify.umich.edu/verify.
  3. Enter your uniqname and click Okta Verify - FastPass to complete authentication and make FastPass your default.

Note: Chrome and Edge users may receive a pop-up asking for permission to look for and connect to any device on your local network. Click Allow. You will only need to do this once. If you click Block, you will not be able to use Okta FastPass on that browser until you reset the permissions.

  1. Complete the Windows Hello authentication option.

You are now set up and ready to use Okta FastPass, and you can close any remaining browser windows.
