Limitations of Google Sites for Fully Accessible Website Creation

Environment

Google Sites website creation platform

Issue

You don't know if you can build an accessible website with Google Sites.

You encounter accessibility barriers in websites created with Google Sites.

Resolution

Google Sites is not recommended for building U-M websites. The platform is limited in terms of creating websites that meet required accessibility standards. You should connect with your IT staff to identify platforms supported by your department (e.g. Drupal, Wordpress.)

Google Sites may be appropriate for small, simple websites at U-M.

Limitations

Key limitations include:

  • Limited customization: No access to the underlying HTML, ARIA attributes, or semantic structure.
  • Navigation issues: Some layouts create confusing heading hierarchies or tab order.
  • Widgets and embeds: Built-in components (e.g., buttons, carousels, calendars) may not meet accessibility requirements.
  • Keyboard and focus control: Users cannot fully manage focus states or customize keyboard navigation.
  • Screen reader compatibility: Certain elements are not announced properly, and alt text options are limited.
  • Advanced accessibility features: Skip links, landmark roles, and custom ARIA labeling are not supported.
  • Responsiveness: Some templates do not adapt well to assistive technologies.

Because of these restrictions, Google Sites is best suited for simple or internal sites and is not appropriate for complex, high-visibility, or institutional U-M websites.

Components to Use / Avoid

Recommended:

  • Plain text and headings (use heading styles consistently for hierarchy).
  • Simple images with meaningful alt text.
  • Descriptive link text.
  • Small, simple data tables.

Avoid when possible:

  • Carousels, image galleries, or slideshows.
  • Embedded calendars, maps, or third-party widgets without accessible alternatives.
  • Decorative layouts that rely heavily on columns or background images.
