Using Grackle to Check your Digital Signage Content in Google Slides

Environment

Google Slides

Issue

Grackle Slides checks for issues that are relevant to the slides themselves, and for issues that will only be relevant if the slides are exported to PDF. This article is intended to guide individuals creating Google Slides for use in digital signage on what Grackle report items are important for their purposes and which can be ignored. Please see Grackle Docs, Slides, and Sheets Add-Ons for more information about using Grackle.

Resolution

Signs may be developed in one of two ways:

  1. An image is generated elsewhere and ported to Google Slides. In this case, the only important accessibility consideration is to provide alternative text. This would usually be a transcript of the text within the image. You can add alt text by right-clicking on the image and then choosing Format Options > Alt Text. After you have added the text, close the Format Options box; the text will save automatically. There is no need to run Grackle.

  2. The slide is generated as native Google Slide content. When you run Grackle, pay particular attention to results for the following checks:
    • A slide should have a title that provides a concise summary of its purpose. For example, "Tech Shop Sale Items" or "Severe Weather Precautions."
    • Images should have alternative text. See above instructions for item 1.
    • Elements should have alternative text. See above instructions for item 1.
    • Links should not be broken apart. Select the text you want in your list, and from the toolbar select Bulleted List or Numbered List. You may need to do some reformatting to ensure all list items are grouped together.
    • Fine print should be avoided. Use easy to read sans-serif fonts such as Ariel or Calibri, and aim for a font size that is at least 24 points.
    • High color contrast should be used. Use the free Colour Contrast Analyzer to ensure there is enough contrast between your text color and background color for good legibility.
