Google: Create and Use Templates in Gmail

Issue

  • How do I create email canned responses or templates in Gmail?
  • The templates option when composing an email. How do I enable it?

Resolution

  • If you have a message that doesn’t change often, you can save it as a Gmail template to reuse.
  • You must enable the templates feature in your Gmail settings before you can create a template. The feature is off by default and only available for Gmail on the web.
    1. Go to U-M Gmail.
    2. Click the gear icon in the top right corner and click See all settings.
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
    4. Click Enable.
    5. Click Save Changes.
  • Refer to the Google Help Center | Create a template in Gmail for detailed information. It includes instructions on creating/editing templates, inserting templates into a new email, and creating automatic replies for messages using templates.
    • The instructions apply to your individual Gmail account and Google Shared Accounts, including delegated access to mailboxes.

Additional Information

Templates were previously called "canned responses" until ~2019, when Google Labs in Gmail was discontinued.
