Environment
U-M Google, Gmail
Issue
- How do I create email canned responses or templates in Gmail?
- The templates option when composing an email. How do I enable it?
Resolution
- If you have a message that doesn’t change often, you can save it as a Gmail template to reuse.
- You must enable the templates feature in your Gmail settings before you can create a template. The feature is off by default and only available for Gmail on the web.
- Go to U-M Gmail.
- Click the gear icon in the top right corner and click See all settings.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Click Enable.
- Click Save Changes.
- Refer to the Google Help Center | Create a template in Gmail for detailed information. It includes instructions on creating/editing templates, inserting templates into a new email, and creating automatic replies for messages using templates.
- The instructions apply to your individual Gmail account and Google Shared Accounts, including delegated access to mailboxes.
Additional Information
Templates were previously called "canned responses" until ~2019, when Google Labs in Gmail was discontinued.
