Reset U-M Microsoft 365 Password

Environment

U-M Microsoft 365

Issue

Attempting to reset my Microsoft 365 password results in the following error message: "You can't reset your own password because password writeback, how your password changes in the cloud are copied to your organization's on-premises system, isn't turned on for your organization."

Resolution

Note: The following information only applies to the U-M Microsoft 365 environment. Questions or issues relating to the Michigan Medicine Microsoft 365 environment should be directed to HITS.

This error is encountered when trying to reset a U-M Microsoft 365 password using the Microsoft password reset page. The U-M Microsoft 365 password is the same password as the UMICH password. As such, it should be changed using the U-M password reset system rather than the Microsoft password reset system.

First attempt to sign in to Microsoft 365 using your uniqname@umich.edu email address and UMICH password. If that fails, then you should change/reset your UMICH  password.
