Microsoft 365: "Cannot Activate Office 365 Apps. Your Organization Has Disabled This Device" Error

Environment

Microsoft 365, Office productivity apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

Issue

When I try to sign in to or activate the Microsoft 365 apps on my computer, I receive the following error message:

"Something went wrong
Your organization has disabled this device. To fix this, contact your system administrator and provide the error code 135011.
More information: https://wmv.microsoft.com/wamerrors"

What should I do to resolve this error?

Resolution

This error usually appears when there is an issue with the Microsoft 365 license assigned to you. To resolve the error:

  1. Sign out of Microsoft 365 (if you aren't already).
  2. Open the Command Prompt.
    • You can find this program by clicking the magnified glass icon in your taskbar and searching for "Command Prompt."
    • You may need to run this program as an administrator. After searching for "Command Prompt," select Run as administrator from the right side search result. (Alternatively, if the program is on your desktop already, right-click and select this option.) Click Yes when asked to confirm the action.
  3. Enter the following command in the window that opens and hit Enterdsregcmd /forcerecovery
  4. Select Sign in from the dialog box that appears.
  5. Follow the steps provided to complete the sign-in process.

The Microsoft 365 apps should now be activated on your computer.

Additional Information

  • Another indication that something is wrong is when you open a Microsoft 365 app, and it says, for example, "Word (unlicensed product)."
  • When following the steps above, you may receive a message stating that "There is a problem with the work or school account," which is a good sign.
