Issue

How do I use U-M Maizey?

Resolution

If you are creating a Maizey project for a Canvas course, see the article Getting Started with Maizey Canvas Connector. The steps outlined in this article are for creating Maizey projects using Dropbox, Google Drive, or a public website.

Currently, U-M Maizey can index data from Dropbox, Google Drive, a public website, or Canvas.

Sign in and Create a New Project

Navigate to umgpt.umich.edu/maizey, and then sign in with your uniqname and UMICH password and complete multi-factor authentication (MFA).

  1. Click Create Maizey Project.
  2. Enter a Project Name.
  3. Enter a valid, authorized Billing Shortcode.
  4. If you wish to create a non-private project that can be configured by others, uncheck the Private toggle and select an Admin Group from the list that displays. Otherwise, skip this step.
  5. Click the Protected Health Information (PHI) toggle to indicate if this project contains PHI.
  6. Click Submit

Your project has been created, and you can now index your data source(s) and create Apps for your project.

Index Data Sources

  1. Click Data Sources
  2. Click Create Data Source.
  3. Select the data source type from the drop-down menu, then click Link Data and follow the instructions to add your data source.
  • If you selected Google Drive, copy/paste the URL for your desired folder into the field provided, or click Google Drive to select the desired folder from the file picker. See Google Drive as a Data Source in U-M Maizey for more information. When creating a Google project for the first time, you’ll be prompted to:
    • Select your account to authorize for the ITS-AI project
    • Allow ITS-AI access to your Google Drive (required)
  • If you selected Dropbox, select the folder you wish to use from the drop-down menu. All top-level folders you have access to in Dropbox will display.
    • When creating a Dropbox project for the first time, you’ll be prompted to allow ITS Generative AI Services to view the content related to your account and files (required)
  • If you selected public website, provide the web URL you wish to use, or list multiple URLs each on a separate line.
    • Note: Maizey will only index data for the base URL you provide (not sub-pages). If you want to include sub pages, list the individual URLs on a separate line.
    • Tip: Use the "Go To URL Extractor" button at the bottom of the page to generate a list of scraped URLs you can select from to copy and add to your project.

Repeat these steps to add additional data sources as needed.

Create App

It is strongly recommended that you review Guidance on AI Settings for more information about some of these options before continuing.

  1. Click Apps in the top-right.
  2. Click Create Maizey App.
  3. Click Legacy Chat. Note that this is currently the only app type available, but more will be added soon.
  4. Enter an App Title.
  5. Enter an App Path
  6. Set the App Access field to indicate who can use the app.
  7. If you selected “Admins + Viewer Group” in the previous step, click the Viewer Group drop-down and select the appropriate MCommunity group. Otherwise, skip this step.

Note: The Viewer Group field only displays MCommunity groups for which you are a member.

  1. Enter a Description of the app (optional).
  2. Click into the System Prompt Augmentation field to edit your system prompt.
  • Though there is a default system prompt, this field is the set of instructions that guides your Maizey’s AI experience, and we strongly recommend you update it to reflect the behavior, tone, and response style you prefer.
  • Use the Maizey Prompt Generator for help creating a system prompt tailored to your use case.
  • Visit the Maizey System Prompts page for additional guidance and resources.
  1. Use the slider to adjust the Temperature setting for your App (optional). See more about adjusting the Temperature setting
  2. Click the Conversational toggle to enable this feature (optional).
  • Conversational disabled allows essentially one query, one response. The chat tool does not incorporate or reference the chat history in its response. Best option for a simple information-retrieval chat tool.
  • Conversational enabled allows the chat tool to reference and incorporate the chat conversation history into its response. Best option for more advanced chat tools, allowing you to ask follow-up questions that reference previous interactions from within a single chat conversation.
  1. Click the Return Data Sources in Response toggle to enable this feature (optional)
  2. Click Submit

Repeat these steps to create additional Apps in your Maizey Project. Or, click the App Title to open the app and test it.

Publish App (If App Has Viewer Group)

Depending on your selection in the “App Access” setting (step 17), you may need to publish the app:

  • If you select Admins Only, the app is automatically published (and cannot be unpublished). You can skip the steps below.
  • If you select Admins + Viewer Group, the app is unpublished by default and must be published before the Viewer Group can access it. Follow the steps below to publish the app.
  1. Click Apps.
  2. Click the three dots next to the app you wish to publish and select Configure App.
  3. Click Edit App.
  4. Click the Published toggle to publish the app.
  5. Click Modify.

Share App with Viewer Group

If you create an app with a Viewer Group, you can share the app members of the group via the Public URL, which is listed near the top of the App Details page.

Important!

  • Note that there can be a delay as data is being indexed. You can view progress in the Task Activity list on the Project Detail tab.
  • If changes are made to your data sources, you will need to reindex the data sources. See instructions to manually reindex or set up scheduled automatic reindexing.
