How do I start using WSL?

Note: The following instructions only refer to running WSL on CAEN Lab Software Environment (CLSE) computers.

To use CAEN’s WSL instance, you must be using a computer running the CLSE for Windows, either at an in-person lab location or via Windows Remote Desktop Service. Once you’re logged in, AppsAnywhere should open automatically. If it doesn’t, either double click the CAEN Software icon on the desktop, or search for “AppsAnywhere” in the Start menu.

Once you have AppsAnywhere open, simply search wsl in the search bar at the top of the page. Make sure you select the appropriate results; most users will use CAEN RHEL#.# WSL2, like the example below (Note: The only difference between these is the WSL version. Microsoft details the differences between them here, but most users should default to WSL2):

This step might take some time to load, but once it does, you should see a window that looks something like this.

Clicking Launch should open the "Cloudpaging Player" window with an option(s) to to run applications, based on the role at the University:

Click the green "play" or Launch icon at the top, and wait until a new window appears with a traditional Linux prompt:

WSL is now ready to use.
