Registering non-umich.edu domains

Tags DNS

Summary

Register a domain name outside the umich.edu space, such as something.com or somethingelse.org. For domains inside the umich.edu space, see Registering umich.edu domains.

Environment

U-M DNS

Directions

  1. Identify the domain name you want, such as "something.com" or "somethingelse.org." Consider getting it both with and without a leading "www."

  2. Email that domain name, your shortcode, and the length of time you want the name to exist to domainreg@umich.edu. That time can be up to 10 years but some top-level domains like .com have a 3-year limit.

Additional notes

The domainreg team is a reseller for OpenSRS (Tucows); they pass on the price with no added charges or markup. The people in that group overlap with the "ITS AWI Web and Application Hosting" group and work closely with Hostmaster-DNS-DHCP.
