How to Submit a Canvas Video Assignment 

Resolution

There are three ways to attach MiVideo media depending on the assignment submission type; text entry, media recordings, or file uploads.

Important: Canvas does not support file uploads larger than 5 GB. This limit only applies to uploads to Canvas and does not apply if embedding a MiVideo video into the assignment (text entry submission).


Text Entry Submission type  

MiVideo media can be embedded into the Rich Text Editor.

Upload media to My Media (skip this section if your media has already been uploaded)

Add media to your My Media library by navigating to Account > My Media > Add New and selecting one of the following options:

  1. If you have a video ready to upload select Media Upload. Make sure you get the success message before leaving the page. If you edit the title or description click the Save button.
  2. To use a browser-based webcam, audio, and screen recorder select Kaltura Express Capture.
    • Express Capture may not work on Safari.
    • Recommended only for short recordings.
    • After recording, select Download a Copy which will download a copy for backup to prevent loosing the recording if you experience a network issue during upload.
    •  The select Use This to upload the recording to My Media.

  3. To use the ​Windows/Mac webcam, audio, and screen recording software application select Kaltura Capture.
    • Kaltura Capture is a free software application for Mac and Windows. It will record your screen/Powerpoint presentation as well as webcam/audio. 
    • After recording, select the Save & Upload option to upload to My Media.

Tip: (optional) See the Video Editor article for more information on editing your video (trim, chop, splice, and copy) once it has been uploaded to My Media.

Submit Assignment

  1. Go to the assignment in Canvas and click the Start Assignment button. In the Canvas text editor, you can add any text you want to, then embed your video submission.
  2. To embed media, select the MiVideo icon in the second row of toolbar buttons. If you do not see the MiVideo icon, click the triple dots icon.
  3. Make sure the My Media tab is selected.
  4. Click the Embed button next to the video you want to submit.

Tip: You can submit a video that is still processing. Processing will run in the background.

  1. Click the Submit Assignment button for the assignment. You can go back into the assignment and click on Submission Details to check the status of your submission anytime. When it’s ready, you'll be able to play the video back and see exactly what the instructor will see.

Media Recording Submission type 

MiVideo media can be uploaded and attached to the assignment.

Note: You are not able to embed the video from My Media with this submission type, the recording must exist on your computer's hard drive. 

Submit Assignment

  1. Go to the assignment in Canvas and click the Start Assignment button.
  2. Click the Record/Upload Media button.
  3. Select the Upload Media tab then the Select Video File button.
  4. Locate the video file on your hard drive and select Open.
  5. The video will upload to the assignment.
  6. Click the Submit Assignment button for the assignment. You can go back into the assignment and click on Submission Details to play the video back and see exactly what the instructor will see.

File Uploads Submission type 

MiVideo media can be uploaded and attached to the assignment.

Note: You are not able to embed the video from My Media with this submission type, the recording must exist on your computer's hard drive. 

Submit Assignment

  1. Go to the assignment in Canvas and click the Start Assignment button.
  2. Click the Upload tab then the Choose a file to upload button.
  3. Locate the video file on your hard drive and select Open.
  4. The video will upload to the assignment.
  5. Click the Submit Assignment button for the assignment. You can go back into the assignment and click on Submission Details to play the video back and see exactly what the instructor will see.
