Issue
I need to sign in but do not have my Okta Verify App, Okta hardware token, or any back-up MFA method available
Resolution
Availability
Self-service Okta MFA recovery is currently available only to students. It will be expanded in the future.
- Only students can use self-service at current time.
- Those with a Michigan Medicine affiliation, including students, should contact HITS.
- All others should contact the ITS Service Center.
Before You Begin
- For best success, complete process on a mobile phone or tablet with camera.
- Have your ID ready. Most driver’s licenses and passports are accepted.
Complete ID verification and get Temporary Access Code
- Go to https://recovery.it.umich.edu.
- Click Sign in to check Eligibility.
- Sign in with your uniqname and UMICH password.
- Click Get Started.
- Follow the prompts to verify your identity. You will be asked to take photos of your ID and a selfie.

- Click Done. You will be redirected to a page that displays a temporary access code.
- If you changed to a different device during ID verification, you may be prompted to login with your uniqname and UMICH password again before you see your temporary access code.
Important
- To use your temporary access code, you may need to select Verify with something else, then select Temporary Access Code.
- If you do not see this option, refresh the page and start the sign in flow over again.
- The code can be used multiple times for the next 10 days.
- To avoid being locked out in the future:
- Add more than one security method to your account.
- Use your security methods for future sign-ins.
- Temporary access codes are limited. You can only generate a limited number.
