Duo Two-Factor Authentication
Issue
Instructions for enrolling your device (smartphone or tablet) in Duo so you can use it for two-factor authentication (2FA) at U-M.
Resolution
Initial enrollment in Duo is part of the uniqname setup process. The steps below detail how to enroll in Duo two-factor at U-M for the first time.
Note If you have already started using Duo two-factor at U-M and want to add a device, refer to the steps in Options for Two-Factor Authentication.
First, begin by installing the Duo mobile app on your mobile device.
For best results, complete these steps on a desktop or laptop computer.
- On the Duo Device Management page, click Add a Device.
- Click Continue.
- Click Enroll.
- Click Get Started.
- Select Duo Mobile.
- Click Continue.
- Click Yes, it’s correct if the correct phone number displays. Or, enter the correct phone number.
- Enter the passcode that was sent to your phone and click Verify.
- Open the Duo Mobile app on your device and scan the QR code.
- If you do not want to give the Duo Mobile application access to your device's camera, or you are not able to scan the QR code click Get an activation link instead
- Enter your email address and click Send Email.
- Once you get it, open the email from the device you are registering with Duo 2FA and click the activation link.
- A new tab will open in your browser, then you'll be redirected to the Duo Mobile app. You may need to click Open to be redirected.
- Name your account "University of Michigan" and click Save.
- You should see confirmation that the activation is complete.
- Click Continue.
- If you have another device or phone number to add as a backup option, select it now, or click Skip for now.
- Click Log in with Duo.
Notes
- The most recent version of the Duo Mobile app is available for devices running Android 11 or later and iOS 15 or later.
- An iPhone and want to use the Duo Mobile app on an Apple Watch, use the companion Watch app on the iPhone to show the Duo Mobile app on your Apple Watch.
- An Android smartphone, you can receive and approve Duo push notifications on a paired smartwatch if you ensure that notifications are enabled on the phone. To approve authentications, your phone must be unlocked. If your phone is normally locked, you can enable Smart Lock in order to approve notification actions.
- Michigan Medicine affiliates will not be able to call or text options with Michigan Medicine related resources. You will want to set up the Duo Mobile app, or enroll a security key to ensure you can authenticate everywhere. Contact Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) if you have additional questions about Duo authentication for Michigan Medicine.

If you have a replacement device and cannot authenticate with Duo using the previous device to access the Duo enrollment page, please contact the ITS Service Center for assistance. We will be able to help you add your replacement device.
