Environment
Google, Google Colaboratory (or Colab Pro)
Issue
Google has a service called "Colaboratory" (aka "Colab") that can be used for electronic research notebooks, specifically Jupyter notebooks. (https://colab.research.google.com) Can I use it with my U-M Google account?
Resolution
- According to Google, "Colaboratory, or 'Colab' for short, is a product from Google Research. Colab allows anybody to write and execute arbitrary python code through the browser, and is especially well suited to machine learning, data analysis and education. More technically, Colab is a hosted Jupyter notebook service that requires no setup to use, while providing free access to computing resources, including GPUs."
- Google Colaboratory is not covered under the university's Google Workspace agreement. This means we do not provide support for it, nor receive support from Google for any issues that may arise from your use of it.
- It should be considered a Google Additional Service for which we do not provide support. It also should not be used for sensitive data of any kind.
- There is a Pro version ("Colab Pro"), which requires payment. U-M Google accounts cannot do this because Google Pay is disabled.
SOLUTION: Advanced Research Computing (ARC) provides the Great Lakes service, which includes Jupyter Notebooks for use at U-M. To learn more about the Great Lakes service and to get started, visit the following website for more information:
