Change a Grade from Incomplete "I" to a Letter Grade

Environment

Faculty Business, Student Administration

Issue

Updating a student's grade from Incomplete (I) to a letter grade, for those authorized to do so.

Resolution

The MPathways Student Administration system has rules about what the I grade can change to, based on the student's academic program. If you try to change an I grade to something that's not allowed in the rules, you will get a message saying this is "an invalid change for the student".

When changing an Incomplete (I) to a letter grade...

  • For most schools/colleges, you must change the Incomplete (I) grade to I plus a letter grade (A, A-, B, B+, etc.). For example, to change from I to an A+, you will need to enter IA+ as the new grade.
    • For schools/colleges requiring the I prefix, the I plus final grade will remain on the student's record and cannot be removed without a petition or special exception by the college.
  • If the system tells you it is an "invalid change for this student"...
    • Talk to your college's registrar or student records specialist to find out what grades are allowed for this student's academic program.
    • If more help is needed, contact the Registrar's Office Academic Records & Enrollment team (contact information).
      • ITS technical staff cannot change a grade that is disallowed by the Student Administration system.

Additional Information

Each U-M school/college has unique policies for Incomplete grades. For instance, some colleges change I to I plus a letter grade. Other colleges change I to the letter grade with no I prefix. The policy for each student is based on their academic program rather than the class's academic career.
