Slack: Hide Muted Channels From Sidebar

Environment

U-M Slack

Issue

  • Some channels are no longer appearing in my sidebar in Slack. Where did they go, and how do I get them back?
  • How do I hide muted channels from my sidebar without leaving the channel?

Resolution

In late 2025, Slack released a setting that automatically hides muted channels from your sidebar. This setting appears to be default ON for all accounts and can only be adjusted at the account level. If you noticed some of your channels are missing from your sidebar, verify this setting is unchecked in your Preferences.

To hide/unhide muted channels from your sidebar:

  1. Click your profile picture in the lower left corner and select Preferences.
  2. Click Home from the left navigation.
  3. Scroll to the "Sidebar Organization" section and check/uncheck the Hide muted channels from your sidebar box.

Additional Information

If this setting is not enabled, and you still can't find your missing channel(s), it could be because:

  • You were removed from the channel or channel's workspace.
  • You left the channel's workspace.
  • The channel was archived. (There should be a Slackbot message noting this action.)
  • You hid the channel's workspace from your sidebar.
