What is the difference between Panorama and the built-in Canvas accessibility checker?

Resolution

Panorama is our primary tool for Canvas accessibility at U-M. Canvas also has a built-in accessibility checker that can be used in addition to Panorama. Here are the differences between the two:

  • PanoramaPanorama is a Canvas accessibility tool with features for both students and instructors. Panorama appears by default in all Canvas course navigation, and displays icons throughout the course. Panorama provides a comprehensive analysis of course content accessibility, offers detailed reports, and gives suggestions for improvement across various types of content.
  • Built-in Canvas Accessibility Checker: The built-in accessibility checker in Canvas only appears in the rich text editor. It focuses on identifying and fixing common accessibility issues within individual pages or items in Canvas. Panorama is also available in the rich text editor.

The following image shows the accessibility icons in the rich text editor in Canvas. The first icon, a gauge showing 6 issues, is the Panorama icon. The third icon, showing the accessibility figure and 2 issues, is the built-in checker. These numbers are different because Panorama is a more comprehensive tool.

After the rich text editor, there are several icons include the Panorama icon showing 6 issues, and the built-in checker showing 2 issues.
