Zoom: Alternative Host and Co-Host Comparison

Environment

U-M Zoom

Issue

What is the difference between an alternative host and a co-host in Zoom?

Resolution

Co-hosts

  • A co-host is assigned by the host during a meeting. They cannot be assigned before the meeting starts.
  • Any participant in the meeting after it starts can be made a co-host. External (non-UM) Zoom accounts can also be made co-hosts.
  • Refer to Zoom Support for instructions on assigning co-hosts.

Alternative hosts

  • Alternative hosts are assigned before a meeting starts. They cannot be assigned during a meeting.
  • Only U-M Zoom accounts can be designated as alternative hosts for U-M Zoom meetings. External (non-UM) Zoom accounts cannot.
  • Typically, you can use the alternative host feature to designate another U-M Zoom account to start your meeting or webinar if you are unable to do so.
    • If the alternative host starts the meeting instead of the primary host (the meeting creator), the alternative host becomes the meeting's host.
      • However, if the primary host joins the meeting later, they will regain host controls. The alternative host will automatically be assigned to a co-host role.
    • If there are multiple alternative hosts, only the first one to join will become the host. The others will automatically become co-hosts.
  • Refer to Zoom: Add an Alternative Host to Meeting/Webinar for instructions on assigning alternative hosts. You can also refer to Zoom Support | Designating an alternative host for more information.
