What are "smart features" in Google, and how do I turn off smart features and personalization across my Google Workspace apps?

Resolution

In Calendar, Chat, Drive, Gmail, and Meet, you can manage smart feature settings. Smart features allow Google to "personalize" your experience across your Google Workspace apps, using data from your account. Depending on your smart feature settings, features include:

• Ask Gemini to summarize content, create drafts, and find key information in various apps (via the Google Workspace Connect App)
• Show events from Gmail in Calendar, such as flights or reservations
• Automatic email filtering/categorization (Primary/Social/Promotions)
• Smart Compose (suggested text) in Gmail
  • Note that Smart Compose personalization (i.e., Smart Compose is personalized to your writing style) is disabled in U-M Google.
• Smart Reply (suggested quick replies) in Gmail
• Summary cards above emails (travel, package tracking, and more) in Gmail
• Other Gmail features such as grammar and spelling suggestions, autocorrect, and nudges

To turn off smart features across your Google account, there are three settings you must adjust:

1. Open U-M Gmail on the web.
2. Click the gear icon in the top right corner and click See all settings.
3. Uncheck the Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet box next to "Smart features" under the General tab.
   • You will need to reload your page for the setting to take effect. Click Turn off and reload when prompted.
4. Navigate back to your General settings and click Manage Workspace smart feature settings next to "Google Workspace smart features​​​​​​​."
5. Toggle both Smart features in Google Workspace and Smart features in other Google products off and click Save.
