Which application should I use to apply to the University of Michigan?
First-year Applicants
If you have not yet received a high school diploma or if you have graduated from high school but have not taken any college courses, you will need to apply as a first-year applicant.

Transfer Applicants
If you have attended any institution of higher education other than the University of Michigan (on any basis, for any length of time) following graduation from high school, you will need to apply as a transfer applicant and submit official transcripts from all of the colleges that you have attended.

Cross-campus Applicants
Any current or former University of Michigan student (including U-M alums) who wishes to transfer from one school or college on the Ann Arbor campus to another is considered a cross-campus applicant.
Complete our Cross-campus Transfer Application. Exceptions: If you wish to transfer into the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts or the Stamps School of Art & Design, you are required to first meet with an academic advisor. Readmit Applicants
Any former University of Michigan student (including U-M alums) who took time away from U-M and now wishes to return to the same school or college on the Ann Arbor campus is considered a readmit applicant.
Contact the academic advising office for the school or college to which you are returning for application instructions if you:
- Registered and withdrew after the drop/add deadline of your first term at U-M.
- Did not register for a year or more.
- Were suspended.
If you previously attended and completed your first semester at UM-Ann Arbor and have been away for less than a year, you do not need to submit an application. Instead, you may request a registration appointment for an upcoming term from the Registrar’s Office. Information regarding registration may be found on the Office of the Registrar’s website.
Complete the Office of Undergraduate Admissions Readmit Application if you:
- Registered and withdrew after the first day of class of your first term at U-M, but before the drop/add deadline. Exception: Michigan Engineering students who have not taken any courses elsewhere since their original term of admission should contact Michigan Engineering's Office of Undergraduate Recruitment directly.
- Completed a degree at U-M and wish to obtain a second degree within the same school or college.

Non-degree Applicants
If you already have an undergraduate degree and need to meet graduate school admission requirements or are interested in furthering your education without pursuing a degree, you may consider applying to the university as a non-degree seeking student for the fall or winter term.
If you wish to take courses at the University of Michigan during spring (May/June) and summer (July/August) half-term sessions and then transfer your course credit back to your home institution, you are also considered a non-degree seeking student.
High school students who wish to dual enroll in courses at the University of Michigan are dual U-M enrollment non-degree applicants.

Special Auditor Applicants
The mature person who is not currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program and whose education is no longer limited by degree and credit requirements has unusual opportunities for diversified study and self-development. Courses that are audited are typically taken for personal enrichment and cannot be taken for grades or college credit.
