What folders should I save my files to on a Windows CLSE computer?

When using a CAEN Lab Software Environment (CLSE) Windows computer, all files can be saved to the N: network drive, which maps to a student's CAEN Home Directory. This can be found in the file explorer under This PC. Any files that are not stored in this location will be deleted when you log off of the computer.

For students and course instructors, many of the key Windows profile folders are conveniently redirected to the N: Drive automatically, meaning that files saved in these locations will be available at future logins. A list of the key folders that are redirected include:

  • Desktop
  • Documents
  • Music
  • Pictures
  • Videos

Note that the Downloads folder is NOT included, so you must copy any files you wish to save from this folder before logging out. The full list of redirected folders can be found by navigating to N:\windat.V2

Note: Another storage option on CAEN Windows computers is to save files to U-M cloud storage services via Kumo. For example, Kumo allows you to mount your U-M Google Drive or U-M Dropbox accounts to network drives, similar to the CAEN Home Directory N: drive.
