All members of the University of Michigan community may use the wired (Ethernet) data network in College of Engineering buildings by following these steps:
- Find your computer or device's MAC Address
- Register for network access
- Connect your computer to the network
- Optional: Requesting a static IP address and hostname
Find your computer or device's MAC address
Access to the wired network requires prior registration of your computer or device's MAC address. Refer to the operating system's help documentation for information on locating your computer's MAC address.
Register for network access
To register your MAC address, fill out and submit the University of Michigan Network Registration form (U-M VPN required).
Registration is required initially to connect to the wired network. After completing the registration form, you will be able to access the network within 30 minutes. Registration will expire if your computer has not connected to the network for one year.
Connect your computer to the network
Plug your network cable into both your computer and the network wall plate. The top two network jacks are active in every wall plate. If you are not able to access the network 30 minutes after registration, unplug your Ethernet cable, wait ten seconds, and plug it back in. If you continue to have trouble connecting to the wired network, contact the ITS Service Center for assistance.
Access to the wired network assumes authorized access to the location of the network wall plate being used.
Optional: Requesting a static IP address and hostname
By default, only "dynamic" IP addresses and hostnames are assigned to computers or devices connected to the network. Engineering faculty, staff, and graduate students may also obtain a "static" IP address and hostname for use on the wired network, only for a University-owned computer or device, by contacting their departmental IT support staff.
