What viewing formats are available via Lecture Recording, and how can I adjust them?

Viewing formats for Lecture Recordings are different versions of the original recording, and are generated for a particular use. Formats are divided into four categories:

  • Web-based format (needed for student playback on the web)
  • Podcast format (allows students to download recordings or subscribe through a podcast app)
  • Downloadable archive format (a large zip file containing all original assets - video, slide video, and slides)
  • Base format (original video from camera)

The Web-based format is selected for all Lecture Recordings by default. However, there is the option to adjust the default format for new recordings, as well as formats on existing recordings. A typical adjustment is to enable podcast formats so viewers can download the videos - either directly or so they can interact through a podcast app.

To create a new format for a single Lecture Recording, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the CAEN Lecture Recording Management website (https://leccap.engin.umich.edu/leccap/manage/site).
  2. Select the Recordings option for the desired course.
  3. Go to the Edit page for any Lecture Recording.
  4. Locate the Viewing Formats module in the right column.
  5. Click the button labeled Add a format and select a format to be created from the pop-up menu.
  6. Once the new format has finished processing, there will be a drop-down menu that displays options to Delete, Download, or send a copy to Google Drive.

To have the system generate other formats every time a new Lecture Recording is made, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the CAEN Lecture Recording Management website (https://leccap.engin.umich.edu/leccap/manage/site).
  2. Select the Site Info option for the desired course.
  3. Scroll down to the Default Viewing Formats module in the right column.
  4. Select the checkbox next to the format(s) you want the system to generate for all future recordings.
  5. Scroll to the end of the page, then click Save.

If there are several existing Lecture Recordings that need these formats added, please contact your organization’s Lecture Recording support team for assistance.
