Printing options within LSA

Body

LSA TS provides a robust printing infrastructure with support for network and locally connected printers. For network-connected printers, LSA TS partners with campus Information Technology Services (ITS) to provide a service called “MPrint.” MPrint allows LSA community members to print from their computer or mobile device to many of the supported networked printers within the College and campus.

The MPrint service

MPrint is an enterprise printer service with many options for managing and printing to network printers. Highlights:

  • Easy to use MPrint website to locate and install printers you have access to near you.
  • Ability to restrict access to printing through new or existing MCommunity groups that we can help configure to match your department's needs.
  • Printers can be excluded entirely at the department’s or owner's discretion if shared use is not desired. Examples: faculty office, lab, instrumentation, poster, and special media.
  • Tracking usage by UMID, as this is an authenticated service.
  • Xerox Multifunction devices can be outfitted with an MCard and MPrint Mobile App Bluetooth readers at no charge to the department. MCard/Mobile Apps readers enabled secure printing to devices, follow-me-printing, scan to cloud storage, and usage tracking if desired.
  • Queue release that will prevent sensitive documents from sitting unattended.
  • Guest access cards can be made available.
  • Web-based printing from any device.

Please note: Departments may have specific features turned on or off for each printer. If you have questions, contact LSA Technology Services.

How to print

Several methods are available to use depending on if your computer is managed by LSA TS, is personal, or if your computer is printing to a networked or locally connected printer.

If you choose to print via an upload to the MPrint website, only basic driver functionality is available. Advanced finishing features such as collating, three-hole punch and stapling that are not in the top left corner of the page will not work. These features require the drivers to be installed to your computer.

LSA Technology Services managed Windows and Mac computers

Locally connected printers

To connect to a printer using a local connection, i.e. USB, simply connect your computer to the printer and make sure it is turned on. Your computer should automatically configure your machine to use the printer. If you are prompted for admin credentials or encounter an error, please contact the LSA TS Service Desk to ask for assistance.

Network connected printers

All LSA Technology Services-managed machines come pre-loaded to work with our MPrint service which include the PaperCut Client. Depending on your department, departmental shared printers are likely already installed on your machines. Available network printers can also be located and installed using the MPrint Website. See the "MPrint: Locate and Install a Printer" webpage for instructions.

Although the above instructions may work for your Linux machine, there are some additional considerations, including multiple ways to install LSA shared printers. Please see the special knowledge base article for Linux-specific information.
