Installing Doulos for Linguistics

Summary

Install Doulos SIL along and a Mac IPA keyboard for Jeffrey Heath devices in Africa.

Directions

  1. Get Doulos SIL:
    1. Go to their website, http://software.sil.org/doulos/download.
    2. Download the version for Mac OS (Doulos SIL 5.000).
    3. Double click on the file DoulosSIL-R.ttf.
    4. In the window "Doulos SIL", click Install Font.
    5. In the "Font Validation" window, put a check mark next to DoulosSIL-R.ttf and click "Install checked."
  2. Get IPA Unicode Keylayout:
    1. Go to their site to get the IPA Unicode 6.2 Macintosh Keyboard v1.5.
    2. Copy the file from /Volumes/IPA-MACkbd/IPA Unicode 6.2(v1.5) MAC.keylayout into /Library/Keyboard\ Layouts/.
  3. Strip off the sticky attributes:
    1. Open Terminal.
    2. Change to that directory: cd /Library/Keyboard\ Layouts/
    3. Enter the command: sudo xattr -d IPA\ Unicode\ 6.2\(v1.5\)\ MAC.keylayout
  4. Set the local system to recognize the new input source(s):
    1. Open System Preferences.
    2. Go to Language & Region.
    3. Click on Keyboard Preferences....
    4. Click on the Input Sources tab.
    5. Click "Others."
    6. Add the IPA Unicode and Unicode Hex inputs.
