LSA standard computer recommendations

LSA Technology Services defines standards to facilitate the speed and accuracy of support and endeavor to provide you with the tools you need to perform the duties of your role. You may make use of this shared shorthand when describing your needs for a new computer.

The information on this page is for Administrators and Managers to reference when requesting hardware for a new position or space across campus, as well as for Staff, Faculty, and Students who wish to purchase a personal device equivalent to LSA standards.

Comparison of different recommendation levels

Devices are recommended based on several factors ranging from hardware reliability, performance, and cost. All recommended devices offer fast processors and enough memory and storage to run the latest software releases over the next four years.

  • Standard devices are recommended for faculty and staff who primarily use their computer for office productivity applications, email, and web browsing, and can very easily multi-task for office use.
    • 8-16GB RAM, 512GB Hard Drive, i7 (or equivalent) CPU
  • Performance devices are geared towards running memory-intensive or research-centric applications and programming - examples include: statistical analysis, video coding, etc.
    • 16-32GB RAM, 512GB-1TB Hard Drive, i9 (or equivalent) CPU
    • May require alternative accessories due to increased power draw
  • Lightweight devices are geared toward traveling on or off campus and balance device mobility with performance. They will perform similarly to the standard model but with premium build materials and design, but also at an increased price point.
    • 8-16GB RAM, 512GB Hard Drive, i7 (or equivalent) CPU - lightweight/convertible chassis
  • Instructional devices are used in classrooms and meeting spaces, requiring more ports and flexibility for customization depending on the needs of the space. 
    • 16GB RAM, 512GB Hard Drive, i7 (or equivalent) CPU, Mini Form Factor

Please note that the current models listed are available to LSA Technology Services members to order tax-free and with significant discounts from associated vendors with purchasing agreements, but these prices are not always fixed. Please request hardware be purchased through a ticket with LSA Technology Services if you need computers or accessories for yourself or your team. 

Windows Hardware

The University of Michigan has vendor contracts with Dell, maintaining short lead times and competitive pricing for enterprise-level products. Please inquire with LSA TS about the compatibility of computers or accessories not listed here.

Apple Hardware
