Installing Dropbox on RHEL 7

Tags linux how-to

Even though the official Dropbox client does not work with RHEL 7, the Dropbox client can still be installed via Flatpak.

 Caution
This procedure may no longer work, because the distributed version of Flatpak is too old. This issue is under investigation.

Objective

Install a Dropbox client and allow for automatic syncing on RHEL 7 compared to the workaround Rclone, which requires a manual sync.

Environment

  • RHEL 7

Procedure

  1. Ensure flatpak is installed: sudo yum install flatpak
  2. Enable the Flathub repo: sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
  3. Install the Dropbox Client package: sudo flatpak -y install flathub com.dropbox.Client
  4. Perform one of the following:
    • Launch the Dropbox Client, which will bring you to Dropbox's login page to connect your Dropbox account.
    • Launch from the command line: flatpak run com.dropbox.Client
    • OR search from the Application Overview GUI: SUPER key
