Bulk Change Tableau Server Database Connection Passwords

Tableau Server hosts resources such as workbooks, dashboards, data sources and visualizations. Typically these resources are connected to external-to-Tableau data sources, such as database servers, for refresh or live connections. In adherence to security policies here at the University, passwords for these external data sources must be changed regularly. Further, workbooks with more than one database connection cannot be updated individually. However, Tableau Server has the functionality to bulk change passwords for data connections to an single database+username including multi-database connection data sources. To do so:

  1. Log into the Tableau Server (e.g. https://tableau.dsc.umich.edu)
  2. If needed, select the correct site. LSA typically uses the "UM" site.
  3. Click the Explore item in the bottom left corner.
  4. In the main pane, in the Explore selector, select "All Data Sources"
  5. Click the filter icon in on the upper right corner of the screen
  6. In the filter items
    • Change the "Data Source Type" to be "All data sources". This will allow you to see data sources embedded in workbooks as well as the independent data sources
    • Enter the database server name where the account whose password is changing resides, e.g. DWPROD.WORLD for central campus data warehouse
    • Enter the Database username whose password is changing
  7. Above the filter section, change "Show As" from "Data Sources" to "Connections".
  8. Click "Select All"
  9. From the "Actions" dropdown menu, select "Edit Connection"
  10. Update the password and any other pertinent information such as username if that is also changing.
  11. Click "Save"
