The purpose of this KB is for desktop support staff to use as guidance for what is expected when personal computing hardware is requested, with no UM funding.
Windows, Mac, Linux
Emeritus Computing Policy
Confirm funding/non-funding with requesting department
If no funding is available, proceed to step 2
If funding is available, follow the faculty upgrade process outlined on the Technology Services Gateway
Send standard email template to emeritus faculty requesting assistance
Discuss with faculty member, UM data and storage solutions - UM data is required to be on an enterprise (Dropbox, Google, UMRCP, etc) solution
It is not expected for desktop support staff to migrate data completely - it is advisable to show faculty how to use chosen storage solutions for their own best practices going forward.
Make a copy of the personal computing checklist form for emeritus and follow steps on page 1 to assess what is needed for procurement
Remaining pages are meant to serve as a reference guide for faculty to use with ITS consultants
Once faculty & desktop support consultation is complete, send a message (via the #sup-techshop Slack channel) to ITS Tech Shop, to let them know the faculty is on their way to the Tech Shop.
Email the faculty member a copy of checklist for reference
Follow up with emeritus in set amount of time (2 weeks) to see about hardware recovery of the old system(s)
Once you have confirmation of data integrity, start property process of old computer
