Directions

Android Devices

Android devices are not enrolled in any managed systems within LSA, so the process is very simple:

  1. Find the serial number or name of the device somewhere on the hardware or case

  2. Confirm that the inventory record in WCO or TDX is updated appropriately to signify that the device is prepared for disposal (if one exists)

  3. Store the decommissioned device on a rack in G240 with similar hardware

iOS Devices

  1. Power on the device to confirm that there are no AppleID accounts logged into the device.

    1. If an account is logged in and the device is determined NOT to be in JAMF, the person logged in will need to log out before further steps can be taken.

      1. Please see External Resources at the end of this document for a link to directions that will allow someone to remove their Apple ID from the device via the internet without it having to be online.

      2. If the device is locked with a passcode and you are unable to have the user remove it (user is no longer employed at the university, user forgot the passcode, user is unknown, ext) then you will need to plug the device into a MacOS device that has Apple Configurator installed and use that to either remove the passcode or wipe the device.

    2. Chargers for such devices are kept in G240 for exactly this purpose and should not be disposed of with other e-waste

    3. The device MUST be powered on and connected to the network in order to unmanage them via JAMF.

  2. Find the serial number or name of the device somewhere on the hardware, case or from inside of the Settings menu

  3. Search the serial number or device name in JAMF

    1. There are two separate instances in JAMF that you may need to search:

      1. iOS - LSA-IC – Used for Instructional and loan devices, usually in WCO inventory

      2. iOS - LSA TS – Used by LSA TS for everything else (research, admin, etc) usually in TDX inventory

  4. If necessary, “Sign Out” any users that may have left their AppleID associated with the device.

  5. Select “unmanage” from the top row of options, wait for about 5 seconds and refresh the page to ensure the command was sent successfully (if not try again) and then “delete” the device by selecting it from the lower right hand corner.

  6. Inform the Izzy team via Slack (#lsa-mac-izzy) to remove the serial of the device from DEP.

  7. Confirm that the inventory record in WCO or TDX is updated appropriately to signify that the device is prepared for disposal (if one exists)

  8. Store the decommissioned device on a rack in G240 with similar hardware

Removing an Apple ID from a device

Please note: Users need to remove their Apple ID from devices before they can be sent to dispo.

Provide users who need to remove their AppleID from managed devices with the following:

How to remove Activation Lock
Device name
Device serial number

This allows the user to remove the activation lock without needing to provide you with their AppleID Password or needing to connect the device to the internet. The name and serial number may be needed to identify the specific device from the list of all enrolled devices on their account.
