Dropbox: Problems Sharing With MCommunity Groups

Summary

This article explains what may be happening when a user has shared a folder with an MCommunity group, and the group members cannot access the folder despite receiving an email invite.

Body

Environment

U-M Dropbox, MCommunity

Issue

I shared a folder with an MCommunity group, but the group members cannot access the folder despite receiving an email invite.

Resolution

  • Dropbox folders are shared with MCommunity groups using the group name, not the email address.
  • The MCommunity group should appear as a suggestion when typing the group's name.
    • It will also show the number of group members under the group's name.
  • The group members will receive an email invitation to "Join" the folder in Dropbox.
    • If a group member does not see the folder in Dropbox, they will need to check the Shared section in Dropbox and click Join folder to add the folder.
    • Once they join the folder, it will show under All files.

Note: Newly created MCommunity groups may take up to 24 hours to sync with U-M Dropbox.

Additional Information

Dropbox reads the MCommunity group email address as an individual account instead of a group. This is why sharing using the email address will not work.

MCommunity groups cannot be made owners of a Dropbox folder.
