Dropbox: Problems Sharing With MCommunity Groups

Summary

This article explains what may be happening when a user has shared a folder with an MCommunity group, and the group members cannot access the folder despite receiving an email invite.

Body

Environment

U-M Dropbox, MCommunity

Issue

I shared a folder with an MCommunity group, but the group members cannot access the folder despite receiving an email invite.

Resolution

  • Dropbox folders are shared with MCommunity groups using the group name, not the email address.
  • The MCommunity group should appear as a suggestion when typing the group's name.
    • It will also show the number of group members under the group's name.
  • The group members will receive an email invitation to "Join" the folder in Dropbox.
    • If a group member does not see the folder in Dropbox, they will need to check the Shared section, hover over the shared folder, and click Join folder to add it to their account.
    • Once they join the folder, it will show under your full name folder in All files.

Note: Newly created MCommunity groups may take up to 24 hours to sync with U-M Dropbox.

Additional Information

  • Dropbox reads the MCommunity group email address as an individual account instead of a group. This is why sharing using the email address will not work.
  • MCommunity groups cannot be made owners of a Dropbox folder.
