Issue
- How do I sign/log in to U-M Google on the web?
- How do I sign/log in to U-M Google on my mobile device?
- How do I sign/log in to U-M Google in the Drive for desktop app?
Resolution
- U-M Google uses Single Sign On (SSO) with U-M Okta Sign In and Okta Verify for multi-factor authentication.
- You should refer to Google: Log In to a Shared Account for more information on signing into your U-M Google Shared Account. However, the login methods below should also work for Shared Accounts.
- Caution: ITS recommends using only apps and clients created and supported by Google or web browsers to connect to U-M Google accounts.
On the web
Google Chrome is the recommended browser for U-M Google. It provides features and functionality not available in other browsers. However, you may use whichever browser you prefer.
There are a few places to log in to U-M Google on the web, depending on which service you want to access first.
- Use one of the following direct U-M links to access a specific app:
- Calendar: calendar.umich.edu
- Drive: drive.umich.edu
- Gmail:
- Other Google services don't have a special U-M link like Calendar, Drive, and Gmail do. Instead, you can access them via their product link, which is usually appname.google.com (e.g., photos.google.com, gemini.google.com, meet.google.com, etc.). Enter your @umich.edu email address and click Next on the sign-in page.
- Log in to U-M Sign In with your uniqname and UMICH password. Complete multi-factor authentication if prompted.
Alternatively, you can log in to your account without starting with a specific app:
- Go to myaccount.google.com.
- Click Go to Google Account in the top right corner.
- Enter your @umich.edu email address and click Next.
- Log in to U-M Sign In with your uniqname and UMICH password. Complete multi-factor authentication if prompted.
- Click the Google apps icon in the top-right corner next to your profile picture, then select the app you want to open.
Account verification and selection
After authenticating, you may encounter additional prompts. They are legitimate, and it is safe to complete them.
- Account verification: This is a safeguard Google Chrome uses when it doesn’t recognize the device you are on. Verify your @umich.edu email address and click Continue.

- Account selection: Select Google Workspace account. This occurs when a Google account was created using an @umich.edu email address before the university adopted Google. It is referred to as a conflicting account. To resolve the conflicting account and prevent this prompt from appearing again, contact the ITS Service Center.

From a mobile device
For a complete list of Google-supported apps, visit the Google Play Store (Android devices) or App Store (iOS devices). If a Google service doesn't have a specific mobile app, you can access it from a browser on your mobile device (e.g., Forms, Sites, etc.).
The mobile login experience may differ between apps and mobile device types. For that reason, the instructions below may differ slightly.
- Depending on whether you've signed in with another account in the app, follow the applicable instructions:
- If you have not signed in to an account in the app:
- Tap Sign in.
- Tap Add account.
- [If Gmail app] Tap Google.
- If you have already signed in to a non-UM account in the app:
- Tap your profile picture in the top right corner.
- Tap Add another account.
- [If Gmail app] Tap Google.
- Depending on your mobile device and its settings, you may need to tap Continue when prompted and/or enter your device's passcode before you can proceed.
- Enter your @umich.edu email address on the sign-in page and tap Next.
- Sign in to U-M Sign In with your uniqname and UMICH password. Complete multi-factor authentication if prompted.
