Issue

  • The Duo application on your phone or tablet indicates you need to reactivate it, such as when your device is not able to receive Duo push notifications.
  • You need to activate Duo for a new phone number or on a tablet. 
  • You replace your phone with a new phone model, while keeping the same phone number.

Resolution

Log in to Duo Device Management

  1. Go to Duo device management and log in with your uniqname and UMICH password. 
    1. If you add a cell phone that is not linked to Duo mobile, you will be prompted to authenticate with 'Text message passcode'.

Activate Duo mobile for a New Phone Number or a Tablet

If you have not done so already, download and install the Duo Mobile app on your new phone.

  1. Click Add a device on the Duo device management web page.
  2. Select Duo Mobile.
  3. Enter your phone number, or if setting up a tablet, click the I have a Tablet link towards the bottom.
  4. On your phone or tablet, open the Duo Mobile app and tap + Add on the top-right of the screen.
  5. Click Use QR code and scan the QR code that displays on your computer screen.

Note: If you cannot scan the QR code, see instructions to Get A Duo Mobile Activation Link by Email.

  1. Name your account "University of Michigan" and click Save.

Reactivate Duo Mobile on a New Phone (Same Phone Number)

If you have not done so already, download and install the Duo Mobile app on your new phone.

  1. Click I have a new phone.
  2. Click Get started.
  3. Click Next.
  4. On your phone, open the Duo Mobile app and tap + Add on the top-right of the screen.
  5. Click Use QR code and scan the QR code that displays on your computer screen.

Note: If you cannot scan the QR code, see instructions to Get A Duo Mobile Activation Link by Email.

  1. Name your account "University of Michigan" and click Save.

Get A DUO Mobile Activation Link by Email

If you do not want to give the Duo Mobile application access to your device's camera, or you are not able to scan the QR code, see steps below.

  1. Click Get an activation link instead (after following one of the two above scenarios).
  2. Enter your email address and click Send Email
  3. Once you receive it, open the email on the device you are registering with Duo and click the activation link.

Note: A new tab will open in your browser, then you'll be redirected to the Duo Mobile app. You may need to click Open to be redirected.

  1. Name your account "University of Michigan" and click Save.
  2. You should see confirmation that the activation is complete. Click Continue to close the pop-up window.

Additional Information

  • If unable to login with Duo, contact the ITS Service Center via phone or chat, to request a temporary Duo bypass code.
  • Michigan Medicine Affiliates will have to use https://duo.it.umich.edu/ to manage their Duo. They cannot use accounts.it.umich.edu.
