Environment
Using a Microsoft Word file with EndNote citations within Google Docs
Issue
EndNote states, "If you create a document using EndNote Cite While You Write and upload it to Google Docs on Google Drive, the EndNote encoding will be removed. Any citations you have originally entered will no longer be connected to EndNote if you download the document from Google Drive."
REPRODUCIBLE USER REPORT:
- Make a Word document with an EndNote bibliography
- Open it for editing via the Google Docs
- Make ANY change to the document and let it autosave
- When you open it again, while the text of the reference will still appear at the end of the file, the referent itself will be gone -- that is, the link between citations and the bibliography at the end is lost
Resolution
EndNote states, "At this time, we do not recommend working with Google Docs on Google Drive if you are using EndNote to generate your references".
Users should look to use EndNote with the desktop version of Microsoft Word to retain EndNote functionality.
