Environment
Tableau dashboards accessed with screen reader.
Issue
Users relying on screen reader assistive technology experience difficulty navigating Tableau dashboards effectively.
Resolution
Tableau dashboards have known limitations for digital accessibility. Even when designed to be as accessible as possible, dashboards may be difficult of confusing to navigate.
Screen Readers for Best Experience
- Recommended: NVDA Screen Reader with Firefox or Chrome
- Supported: JAWS Screen Reader with Firefox or Chrome
- Not Supported: Voice Over screen reader
Navigation
- All elements within a Tableau dashboard are encoded as if they are interactive data visualizations, whether they are visualizations, tables, or text. You may need to tab to and enter individual elements in order to find the content (rather than simply tabbing through elements) as the screen reader may read a generic message relating to the visualization container. To enter the elements place the screen reader in focus mode or disable the virtual pc cursor, press the enter key twice when the element is focused, then you can read the content with the arrow keys.
- Tableau has a list of keyboard shortcuts for navigation and other actions.
Download Data
- Dashboard that enable user data download have a "Download Data" button in the toolbar that allows you to open a menu, make selections, and export data.
