How much does it really cost to attend the University of Michigan?
Educational costs can fall into several different categories, and it is important to understand what "cost" you are looking at when estimating your net price to attend U-M. The Office of Financial Aid (OFA) encourages students and families to think broadly about these expenses.
OFA estimates student budgets each academic year that seek to account for everything it would cost a typical student with a modest budget to attend U-M for that enrollment period. This is referred to as the Cost of Attendance, or COA, and is based on federally defined categories of educational expenses. These categories include:
- Tuition and mandatory fees
- Living Expenses (specifically housing and food)
- Books, course materials, supplies, and equipment
- Transportation
- Miscellaneous personal expenses
