Financial Aid and Living off Campus

What will happen to my financial aid if I move to off-campus housing?

Moving from a university dorm to off-campus housing does not affect your financial aid.

Your financial aid is always paid to your University of Michigan student billing account first and applied to charges on the bill. When you live in university housing, those charges include your residence hall and meal plan expenses. If your financial aid is more than your tuition and mandatory fees, the excess money is applied to the dorm charges on your bill. When you live off-campus, those dorm charges are no longer there. In this case, any excess aid after your tuition and fees are paid is then refunded to you.

Your housing costs are paid to a landlord or outside agency when you are no longer living in the dorms and you are responsible for making those payments. If you receive a financial aid refund, those funds should be used to help pay your living expenses.
