What are the visa requirements for Canadian citizens who need student visas (F-1 or J-1 students)?
Canadian citizens do not need to apply for or obtain a student visa, but they must still pay the SEVIS fee before arriving at the port of entry. In addition, a University of Michigan I-20 is required, and Canadian citizens will need to present this to the border official at the port of entry into the U.S. along with their SEVIS fee receipt, evidence of Canadian citizenship, and evidence of adequate funding for their proposed program of study. There, they will be issued an electronic Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record) establishing the student status that will permit them to stay in the U.S. to study.
