Kaltura - Captions


Overview

Kaltura allows you to order captions for any audio or video file you upload to your My Media gallery. The captioning is performed by machine, so it is important to review the captions for accuracy.


Order Captions

To order captions for your video:

  1. Log into Canvas and click the My Media button on the blue navigation bar to the left.

  2. Click on the video you want to caption.
  3. Below the video, click the Actions button and select Request Captions.
  4. Leave the Service set to Machine Captions.
  5. Scroll down to the drop down menus labeled Service, Source Media Language, and Feature. Change the source language if needed and click Submit.
  6. Once ordered, you will see a list of all captioning requests made for this video along with a status. (Pending, In Process, or Completed).

Depending on the length of the video, it may take some time for the captions to be processed. You will receive an email once the captions are ready.


Access the Edit Tool

Once the captions have been processed, they can be edited for accuracy. There are two ways to access the editing tool.

 

Method 1:

  1. Go to My Media and click on the video.
  2. Click on Actions and select Request Captions.
  3. Scroll down to the Existing Requests section and click the pencil icon to the right of the completed caption request.
  4. You will now be on the caption editing page.

 

Method 2:

  1. Go to My Media and click the pencil icon to the right of the video.
  2. Below the video, click the Captions tab.
  3. Click the Edit Captions button.
  4. You will now be on the caption editing page.

Edit Captions

On the Closed Captions Editor page, you will see the caption text, separated by timestamps, listed on the left side of the page, and a preview of the video on the right that can be used to verify that your captions and audio match.

Editing Caption Text

  1. Hover over the text you wish to edit.
  2. You will see that the text box becomes active at that point. Edit the text as necessary. Edits will appear in real-time on the video preview.
  3. Click the Save button at the top right as you make edits to save your work.

Editing Caption Timestamps

If captions do not match up correctly with the audio, you can edit the timestamps.

  1. Hover over the timestamp you wish to edit.
  2. Click and edit the time as necessary.
  3. If there is an overlap where one caption ends and the next begins, the times will be highlighted in yellow so that you can correct times.
  4. Click the Save button at the top right as you make edits to save your work.
