Slack Error: This person is already in your workspace, but their account is deactivated

Environment

U-M Slack

Issue

When attempting to add a person to a Slack workspace or channel, Slack may return one of the following errors:

Couldn't invite 1 person to channel_name
This person is already in your workspace, but their account is deactivated.

OR

Invitation didn't send. This person has a deactivated account for your organization.

Resolution

This error occurs when trying to invite a user to a Slack channel or workspace and the user has left the workspace the channel is in or had their account deactivated.

  • First confirm whether they are still eligible for a U-M account. If they are, their account may still be active, but they have left/been removed from the workspace and you can proceed to review the next steps below. Ineligible users could still be added to a workspace or channel as a Single-Channel guest.
  • If the channel was created in the "Maize & Blue" workspace, then the user will need to re-join the workspace.
  • If the channel was created in a private workspace, the workspace admin should reactivate their account from the workspace admin settings.
