General Email Configuration

Before You Begin

This guide will include all of the information that you will need to access your U-M Gmail account in a web browser or add your U-M Gmail account to the Gmail Mobile App.

 

Please note: Using IMAP/SMTP is not officially supported by the ITS Helpdesk. The only supported method of retrieving mail from your university account is via the Gmail Web Portal or the Gmail Mobile Application.

Intended Audience

This Quicknote is intended for current faculty, staff, and students who would like to learn about general email configuration for their U-M Gmail accounts.

Requirements

In order to access your U-M Gmail account, you will need your university email address (uniqname@umich.edu) and your current password.

The ITS Helpdesk recommends and supports retrieving mail through the following methods:

U-M Gmail Web Portal

  • Accessing Your Gmail Account
    • In a web browser of your choice, follow the steps below to sign into your U-M Gmail Account:
      1. Navigate to the U-M Gmail WebLogin at https://email.umich.edu
      2. Login with your uniqname and current password.
      3. Complete the Duo Two-Step Verification.
      4. Review Google Terms of Service & Privacy Policy (If first time logging in).

How to Configure Your Mobile Device Email

  • First Time Gmail Mobile App Set-Up: (Android or iOS)
    1. Download the Gmail Mobile App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
    2. Open the Gmail app and tap on "Sign In." Next, select Google account.
    3. Enter your University Email Address (uniqname@umich.edu)
    4. Log in with your uniqname and current password.
    5. Complete Duo Two-Step Verification.
    6. Your Gmail Mobile App will now be configured to access your U-M Gmail account!
  • Adding an Additional Account in the Gmail Mobile App:
    1. Open the Gmail app and select your current account's icon in the top right hand corner.
    2. Tap "Add Another Account"
    3. On "Set up email", select a Google account.
    4. Enter your University Email Address (uniqname@umich.edu)
    5. Tap on Next.
    6. Log in with your uniqname and current password.
    7. Complete Duo Two-Step Verification. 
    8. Your Gmail Mobile App will now be configured to access your U-M Gmail account!
