Linking a Lecture Recording site with a Canvas course site is the simplest way to make all published recordings available to enrolled students.
Note: If a Lecture Recording site has not yet been created for your course, you will need to submit a request before proceeding:
North Campus (predominately Engineering Spaces): Make a request for Lecture Recording site using this form (http://myumi.ch/5J9dy).
Central Campus (predominately LSA Spaces): Visit LSA's Lecture Recording Service page to submit any requests and see an up-to-date list of LSA-supported classrooms equipped with the service (http://myumi.ch/7ZM0B).
To link your Lecture Recording site to an existing Canvas course site...
- Click Save at the bottom of the page.
- Go to the new Lecture Recordings navigation link on the left menu (likely at the bottom of the list) to finish linking your course.
On occasion, the default selection in Canvas will be incorrect, so be sure that the course name AND term of the suggested site matches what is needed.
- Log into Canvas, then go to your course site.
- Click the Settings option at the bottom of the navigation menu on the left.
- Select the Navigation tab from the top of the next page.
- Scroll down the available options until you see Lecture Recordings.
- There are two ways to activate the navigation link.
- Click and drag Lecture Recordings to the top section.
- Open the elipse menu (the three dots) to the right, then select Enable. This method will put the Lecture Recordings navigation tab just above the Settings option in the navigation column after pressing Save.
6. Scroll to the bottom of the page, then press Save.
Now go to the newly added navigation entry labeled Lecture Recordings, and choose the appropriate course to link. Occasionally Canvas will suggest the wrong site, so verify that both the class and listed term match what you are wanting. Again, if a Lecture Recording site has not been created yet, you will need to request one to be made.
To link an additional Lecture Recording site to the same Canvas page...
There are many scenarios where it may be advantageous to have multiple Lecture Recording sites linked to a single Canvas page. If you plan to manage Lab sections, discussion sections, or even multiple lecture sections taught by different instructors all within the same Canvas site, you may want to link and label these other Lecture Recording sites in a way that helps the viewers know which link they are following.
- Go to your Lecture Recording My Sites page (https://leccap.engin.umich.edu/leccap/manage/site)
- Select the Site Info option attached to any Lecture Recording site.
- Look for the Canvas Placements module at the top of the right column.
- Click the + Place recordings in a Canvas course site button.
- Open the Canvas Site dropdown menu, then select the site you want to link. Only sites that you have managing access to in Canvas should appear in the list. If the desired Canvas course site does not appear in the list, contact the Lecture Recording admin team.)
- In the Tab Name field, enter any label that would be helpful. (e.g., Discussion Recordings, Office Hours, Grabación de Conferencias, Review Sessions, etc.) This will create the hyperlink that will take viewers from Canvas to your Lecture Recording playlist, but give you the ability to name it however you would like.
- Click the Add Placement button.
- A pop-up will appear, allowing you to verify that the correct site and correct navigation link name are correct. Press OK if everything is correct.
It may take up to ten minutes for system to fully acknowledge the supplied tab name, so don't be alarmed if it merely shows Lecture Recordings after pressing OK.
The Lecture Recording site should now be linked in your Canvas course site. As a reminder, only published Lecture Recordings will be viewable when anyone follows that hyperlink, and only if those viewers that either meet the parameters set in the Permissions module or have had the Lecture Recording shared with them directly.
