What is WSL?

Body

WSL stands for “Windows Subsystem for Linux.” It is a way to run a Linux environment and applications on a Windows system without having to boot out of Windows. WSL is capable of running many different Linux based operating systems, but we primarily support the usage of a CAEN-specific RHEL instance of WSL running on a computer running the CAEN Lab Software Environment (CLSE).

CAEN provides the following WSL options (the first option will allow users to access licensed engineering software):

CLSE Linux (CAEN Lab Redhat 8 : WSL)
Linux (CAEN Redhat 9 Beta : WSL)
Linux (CAEN Ubuntu 22.04 : WSL)
Linux (CAEN Ubuntu 24.04 : WSL)

For instructions on how to get started, refer to our How do I start using WSL? article.
