Initially released in 2013, Campus Maps was a public online map of points of interest (POI) for the campus community. Its focus was to allow students to navigate the university to find buildings, departments, and parking lots. In 2016 the current version of the application was released and set up to collect other data in a structured way for efficient search and display, instead of consuming data parsed from a web crawler like other map services utilize. Data for campus buildings was imported from a one-time download of building location data provided by University Facilities and Operations. A back-end interface was built to manually update this data and also enter and update other information about POIs. It also provided a centralized display of bus routes, stops, and tracking of current bus locations. In 2019 this particular feature was updated to connect to the Magic Bus API.
Since launch Campus Maps has become a centralized resource for wayfinding and accessing basic building information on campus. It is sourced by other campus services such as the Michigan app & Happening@Michigan to show events at campus locations, and has grown to be used by the entire campus community, visitors to campus and the general public. Campus Maps received over 200,000 page views in 2023 across 100,000 different users and currently lists over 200 buildings.
