Our school's network drive falls under the model of Cloud Storage, which stores data in off-site locations and has allow for data redundancy / recovery.
As long as you follow the applicable laws, policies, and regulations you can store various types of data such as PHI, PII, FERPA, HIPAA on our network drive servers.
You can find more details on the UM safe computing webpage
Aside from using our School's network drives for cloud storage we have two other options:
Accessing Network Drives
VPN
VPN is needed if you are trying to access the network drives off-campus and on a personal computer. The network drives can only be access while on-campus, and VPN simulates being on campus.
Directions to install, along with general VPN information can be found here
If you are using a School issued computer - you may be able to access the Network Drives without manually turning on VPN because there is a VPN service that runs in the background of your computer at all times that automatically tunnels appropriate traffic.
